సాధారణంగా శివ లింగము అన్న మాటకు ఎన్నోవిధములైన వివరణలున్నాయి.శివుణ్ణి  కూడా  ఆంగ్ల భాషోచ్ఛారణ కనుగుణంగా 'షివ' అని పలికే వాళ్ళను నేను చాలామందిని చూసినాను. అంత భాషా దాస్యము అవసరమా అన్నది నా ఆలోచన. ఆప్రకారముగా పలుకుట దోషము. ఉచ్ఛారణ లోపము విలోమ ఫలితము కలిగించుతుంది. 'శివ' అని మాత్రమే పలుకవలెను. మనుస్మృతి ప్రకారము 'లింగం' అన్న శబ్దానికి 16 అర్థాలు వున్నాయని విన్నాను. ఇపుడు మనకు అవసరమైన అర్థమును మాత్రమే ఈ క్రింద పొందు పరుచుచున్నాను.

'లిమః గమయతీతి లింగం' అని నిరుక్త నిర్వచనము. లిం అంటే చేతనము. అంటే ఈ చేతనమే ప్రకృతి. ఇది లయము నుండి ఉద్భవించి ముందునకు సాగేది. లయముతో పెనవేసుకొని వుండేది.

ఇంకొక అర్థమేమిటంటే 'లిం గమయితీతి లింగం.' లయ కారకమైనది లింగం. లయము వైపుకు సాగి లీనమై పోయేది .

ఈ రెండు వివరణలవల్ల మనకు ఏమర్థమౌతుందంటే సృష్ఠి స్థితి లయ కారకమౌతూకూడా  తాను దానికి అతీతముగా వుండేది అని. ఇది పునరావృతము ఔతూనే వుంటుంది. పుట్టిన ప్రతి వస్తువు  గిట్టక మానదు. దాని స్థితి సమయములో, ఒక దానితో ఇంకొకటి పోలిస్తే, తేడా ఉండవచ్చును. ఇదే ప్రకృతి. ప్రకృతి పురుష తత్వమే అర్ధనారీశ్వర తత్వము, అదే  సాంబశివతత్వము. (స+అంబ+శివ ).

There are various explanations for the word Sivalinga. At the outset let me first clarify that the word is SIVA and not SHIVA. As per Manusmruti there are 16 different meanings for Lingam. Meaning suitable to the context has to be taken while explaining the concept.

'Limah Gamayiteeti Linga.' That which originates from the condition of absorption is Lingam.

'Lim Gamayiteeti Linga.'  That which reaches the condition of absorption is Lingam.

Lim means absorbed condition of knowledge or consciousness. Matter originates from consciousness and finally gets absorbed back into consciousness. This is called 'Chetanaavasta.' The one containing the quality of 'chetana'(consciousness) is 'prakRti' or 'Nature.' Hence the nature comes into existence, exists and is later absorbed. This process is repeated in a cyclic manner in nature. Since from the Leena (absorbed) condition it is going forward (Gamana) so the name Lingam. 'Lingam' indicates the principle of creation, sustenance and absorption. For example thing that is created to come into existence from absorption has to finally get decay and be absorbed, that is it has to embrace 'Laya.' The nature originates from Shiva and later gets absorbed in it .The blending of absorbed Shiva and Sakti is 'ardhnaareeswara tatwam.' or 'Samba Siva tatvam' (Sa + Amba+ Siva).
